More Than Accommodation — The Wrap Around Care Keeping Families Together

When a child is seriously ill or injured, the impact reaches far beyond the hospital ward. Families face emotional distress, financial pressure, disrupted education, travel exhaustion and social isolation — often all at once.

That’s where Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW provides critical “wrap around” support designed to keep families together and functioning during the toughest periods of their lives.

Across Northern NSW, services include:

  • Ronald McDonald Houses in Newcastle and Tamworth
  • Family Rooms within hospitals
  • Family Retreats
  • Learning Programs for children missing school
  • Hospitality services and volunteer support
  • Practical assistance including meals, laundry, rest spaces and connection to community

Importantly, the organisation’s support model is about much more than accommodation. It creates stability and emotional safety so families can focus on their child’s recovery instead of the logistics of crisis.

In 2025 alone, more than 6,600 families were supported through Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW programs.

For regional communities, this support is essential. Families often travel hundreds of kilometres to access specialist paediatric treatment in Newcastle or major regional centres. Without support close to hospitals, many would face impossible choices between staying together, financial survival and accessing healthcare.

This is community infrastructure that directly strengthens health outcomes, family wellbeing and regional resilience.
