Regional Development Australia (RDA) Hunter has commenced development of the Hunter Regional Development Framework, a major initiative designed to identify the region’s future economic opportunities and competitive advantages and position the Hunter for long-term prosperity in a rapidly changing global economy.

The Framework will establish a clear, evidence-based view of the Hunter’s economic future, informed by international best practice, emerging global trends and the region’s unique strengths.

Building on the foundations established through the Hunter’s internationally recognised Smart Specialisation work, the project will take a long-term, forward-looking approach to understanding how major shifts such as artificial intelligence, technological change, energy transformation and evolving supply chains are reshaping industries and creating new opportunities for regions around the world.

Over the next two years, RDA Hunter will work closely with industry, government, research organisations and regional stakeholders to identify where the Hunter can build on its existing strengths, unlock new opportunities and strengthen its position as one of Australia’s leading regional economies.

RDA Hunter CEO Kate O’Mara said the project comes at an important time for the region.

“The Hunter is experiencing profound economic change, but it’s also entering a period of enormous opportunity.

“Through this project we want to better understand the global trends that will shape the economy over the coming decades, from artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing to energy transition and changing supply chains and determine where the Hunter is best placed to compete and prosper.

“Our focus is on identifying the opportunities that align with the Hunter’s existing strengths and capabilities, and where the region has genuine competitive advantages that can be leveraged to create long-term economic value.

“Importantly, though, this work will also involve developing a compelling evidence-based case for the Hunter and working with national and international organisations, investors, governments and strategic partners to elevate the region’s profile and help unlock the investment, collaboration and growth opportunities that emerge from it.”

The Framework will be informed by evidence, analysis and engagement with stakeholders across industry, research and government, helping to identify areas of greatest long-term potential. Rather than duplicating existing plans, the Framework will provide a broader regional perspective, positioning the Hunter within national and international economic contexts and helping to focus attention on the opportunities where the region can create the greatest economic value.

The completed Framework is expected to support investment attraction, strengthen policy alignment and elevate the Hunter’s profile with governments, investors and strategic partners, while reinforcing RDA Hunter’s role as a regional convenor and leader in economic development.
