Demand is Growing Faster Than Capacity

The need for Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW services is growing rapidly — and demand is now exceeding available capacity.

Each year, more regional families require specialist medical care away from home, particularly through Newcastle’s major paediatric health network and John Hunter Hospital precinct.

In response, Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW has launched its “Building a Bigger Heart” expansion campaign to ensure no family is turned away.

The proposed expansion includes:

  • 11 new self-contained family units
  • Increased accommodation capacity
  • Expanded support services for regional families
  • Improved ability to respond to long-term stays and complex medical journeys

The growth challenge is not unique to Northern NSW. Across Australia, there are sustained increases in demand as healthcare becomes increasingly centralised in specialist hubs.

For regional communities, this trend raises an important question:

How do we ensure families can access life-saving treatment without experiencing financial hardship, isolation or disconnection from support systems?

Expansion of Ronald McDonald House infrastructure is increasingly becoming part of the broader regional healthcare conversation.
